Z-House by Korean architects Hohyun Park vs Hyunjoo Kim

The Z-House is an architectural residential project designed by Korean architects Hohyun Park and Hyunjoo. The z-house building is located at Gwangju Si, Gyeonggi-Do, where is 30Km away from center of seoul. Surrounded by small houses, it is at the top of a hill with deep slope.

The circulation and relationship among programs in this z-house design is an important thing to consider. Ground level, which is divided by kitchen/Dining and living area and upper level, which is divided by children rooms and master zone are crossing at division area. By this manner, space is gradually ascending from entry to master zone.

Next thing to consider is to make dynamic space by changing size of space and by leading sight. High ceiling at the entrance corridor is more emphasized by sunlight through skylight and a wall, which is faced at the end of corridor, inducts eye to dining area. At this point, the ceiling height is suddenly changed by overhead ramp. High ceiling living area appears through low-rise 3step staircase, which is crossing outside water pond and inside plant area.

From living area, space bifurcates to library at lower level and to upper level. Master zone, where is a climax in space scenario, is connected by a corridor and a ramp from children’s room at upper level. Master bedroom is entered through open bathroom and powder room and reconnected to entrance corridor.

Shape of the building is planned to follow the space scenario and roof, which is covered by black zinc is wrapping around upper level mass and form a homogeneous and muscular shape. Contrarily, lower level masses, which are covered by basalt, stand rigidly. Water pond and inner plant space are inserted at the crossing point of lower level mass and upper level mass.

Single Family Beach House Design by BDA Architects

This single family beach house architecture residential design is located on Australia’s Gold Coast and was projected by BDA Architects. This modest house was designed to replace an existing dwelling on the site which the client had owned for a number of years. The primary design idea was to embrace a two storey covered outdoor living space connecting the house and garden and overlooking the Broadwater.

The resulting design satisfies the clients brief which included the following main elements:
- An elevated living area opening into the garden with views to the Broadwater
- A guest bedroom, bathroom, main entry and laundry on the main level
- A master suite, sitting area, office and separate bedroom on the upper level all with water views
- Car parking and storage below ground

Materials comprise painted, rendered concrete masonry for external walls generally. Some areas of timber frame walls are clad in fibre cement sheet with aluminium cover battens recalling the beachside vernacular of Main Beach. The roof is steel framed and lined. Window frames and shutters are anodised aluminium. Flooring is generally white terrazzo with some areas of natural timber boarding.

The Long Barn Studio by Nicolas Tye Architects

Long Barn Studio is an architecture residential office and studio design projected by Nicolas Tye Architects. This office building is located in Bedfordshire, England.

The 2,200 square foot creation “The Long Barn Studio” is set against Nicolas Tye’s own award winning barn-conversion home and sits comfortably against its mature, rolling hill woodland surround in a Bedfordshire village.

The Long Barn Studio is a simple glazed rectangular unit with frameless 3.2m high glazed panels along its main elevations, which hold a very slight green tint to reflect the seasons of the surrounding glorious landscape. Internally, they provide all those who are lucky enough to enter with a panoramic view that is breathtaking.

The Long Barn Studio utilises rainwater harvesting, its own wind turbine, whole building air heat recovery circulation system, central vacuum and centralised lighting control. Utilising low energy lighting, organic paints and non-toxic chemical sealers further reinstates the philosophy of Nicolas Tye Architects. Their passion for this is clearly evident in their own building, an achievement that many companies long for.

With a build cost of £225,000, the building mirrors a sensitive, but provocative response to modern design, sustainability and the contextual issues of today. The Long Barn Studio is an extraordinary symbol of the practice and its approach to design – a pure expression of ideology.
